Storage with sliding wooden drawers 2026

Sliding wooden drawer storage, we all have one of those storage cabinets right next to our kitchen, under the stairs. It's narrow, deep, and has a sloping roof at the back...and it had become a big dump.

Implementing floating wood box storage can be a great alternative to maintaining order, but first you have to clear everything that prevents work in that area.

Materials / Supplies

• (3) 18" Full Extension Drawer Slides
• (4) Large wooden drawers
• (1) Half wooden box
• (2) Small wooden drawers
• (2) 8' 1×4 pine furring strips
• Blackboard stickers
• 1-5 / 8 Wood Screws
• Wall anchors

#1.

To prepare the large boxes for assembly I reinforced the sides with 2 sections of 1x4 batten strip.

This gave me something substantial to mount the drawer slides to the box. I cut 2 18" pieces for each box on my miter saw.

I attached the 1x4 strips to the large box and used 1-5/8" screws to attach them to the top and bottom of the right side of the box. I repeated this for all 4 boxes.

At this point, take out all the boxes to spray paint them.

Before spray painting, I sanded all edges lightly with 150 grit sandpaper.

You can give it 2 coats of blue spray paint, except on the right side, which would be against the wall.

While they were drying, I cut a spacer plate to help with the installation of the drawer slide. A piece of 1/4" plywood was used and I cut it to 18" by 6".

Use the spacer to lay out the center lines for the drawer slides on each box.

This would ensure that the slides were equally spaced and, more importantly, parallel.

I centered the spacer 1-1/2" from the top of the box and drew a line on each furring strip.

I disassembled the slides into its two parts and used the extension piece for the boxes.

Place them flush with the front of the case and center the mounting holes on the reference lines.

A few quick pilot holes and screws and the boxes had their slides.

Now that the boxes were ready I returned to the closet to install the mounting strips and guides. Cut 2 more pieces of 1×4 ribbon to 39-1/2".

I mounted one in the back corner on the corner post.

The next strip was mounted so it ended 18-3/4" from the back wall (the extra 3/4" was for the base trim).

You can't drive a stud here, so 4 drywall anchors were used to hold the strip.

Now here's where that 1/4" plywood spacer really comes in handy.

I sized the furring strips so they were flush with the top of the top box and then had 3" of space between each box all the way.

Like thisAll you had to do was measure 1-1/2" from the top and set the spacer flush with the front of the furring strip.

Now all I had to do was line up the slides with the front of the furring strip and the mounting holes on the center lines as before.

Attach the slides with the included screws.

I repeated the same with everything and assembled all my slides.

Now, the only thing left was to install the boxes.

The finish is really incredible!
