Know How to Build a Modern Kitchen Island, this is a photo instruction guide to build a modern style wooden kitchen island.
Our objectives were:
- Have a large table area for both eating and working in the kitchen.
- Increase our kitchen storage areas
- Have space to move freely within the kitchen.
Detailed plans are included at the end of the guide.
Step 1: Let's get started

Build the main frame first. You need to build this first to support the vertical column (ax).
For proportions, see the construction plans included in the last step.
We use 4.5 X 9.5 cm wood for the central unit. We use metal connectors.
Step 2: Move up

Upon finishing the main frame, we started with the crosses (one at the top and one at the bottom of the main frame) that support the vertical column (see last photo and next step for detailed instructions)
Step 3: Leveling

The column must be level in both the vertical and horizontal (x and y) directions. Check the second photography method. The remaining legs of the crosses are installed after leveling, as they fit.
ATTENTION: THE CENTRAL PART OF THE TABLE TOP NEEDS TO BE PLACED IMMEDIATELY AFTER PLACING THE COLUMN.
Step 4: Top

The wood is the same as before. Check the photo with metal top now. We use this to transfer forces from the horizontal level (floating shelves) to the vertical ax (column). Otherwise, the force of the weight would tire our connection (at the top of the spine).
Step 5: Bottom of shelves and liners

To support the shelves we use metal connectors. The wood is 18 mm spruce (less prone to breaking than pine).
For proportions and leverage check the design drawings in the last step.
Step 6: Build and Hang the Floating Shelves

For the floating shelves we also use 18mm and 0.6 inch metal wire.
Step 7: Second row of floating shelves and rounding the corners of the table

For the board we use 3.3 cm spruce, with the indication "board quality".
To support the table on the main frame use metal connectors.
Round table corners and edges to avoid injuries.
Step 8: Final touches

Use an antibacterial coating for the entire island.
That's more or less. In the next step, I have included the design plans.
Step 9: Design Plans

If you need any clarification or help to come backr to calculate the proportions, I will gladly help you in messaging. Greetings!
