The Easiest Way to Make a Coffee Table for the Living Room, beautiful piece to pay tribute to the artisans and furniture makers who came before me. The simple yet striking architecture had a dramatic impact on me. When it came time to design new pieces of furniture, I knew I was ready to put that early education to good use.
This cocktail table is my first interpretation of pieces of furniture that first appeared in the early 1900s.
Step 1: Plans and wood

I had the basic idea of what I wanted to do in my head, but I always like to make the designs on a computer by sketching.
Next, I went to find some 5/4 toasted red oak from my supplier.
I used my planer to bring the wood to a thickness of 1 inch and sized everything as close to size as possible, leaving all the pieces long in case I wanted to make any changes to the design.
Pay no attention to aromatic cedar plywood. It's for another project.
Step 2: Top

I decided to make the best ones 24″x 50″. I ripped 3 boards down to a little over 8 inches for each piece and ran them across the seam to straighten the edges for gluing.
After matching the wood grain pattern, I folded the edge and clamped the top.
I used dominoes on my joints, but you can use cookies, dowels, or nothing at all. They mostly help with alignment.
I set the top aside to dry while I work on the legs.
Step 3: Make the legs

There are many ways to make the legs. I decided to laminate them. This is when you take pieces and glue them together and make one larger solid piece.
This makes a very solid leg. I took 3 pieces that were 1″ thick and very flat after going through the planer and gluing them together forming 3″ square legs.
To do this correctly, the wood must be very flat and you need many clamps to apply pressure.
When they are dry, they are run through a table saw and jointer to make the pieces solid, clean and beautiful. You can't even tell they are glued together.
Step 4: Make the frame

After cleaning the legs, cut them to 20″. Limit everything else to size.
- 2 @ 2 1/2″x42″
- 2 @ 2 1/2″x16″
- 1 @ 12″x44″
- 12 @ 1″x1″x10
All of those pieces are 1″ thick. Also make 2 @ 2x2x 16″ for the bottom rails.
I used my Domino assembler to put all the pieces together. It is a very fast way to do carpentry.
Traditional mortise and tenons, or pocket hole screws will also work. Be sure to add glue and plenty of clamps, and leave everything set overnight. (For vertical pieces, the gap is 3/8″, the best way is to make blocks and insert them during gluing)
I also use a 5-10mm offset on all my connections to add a bit of depth. The deck rails are fixed 5mm inside the outer edge of the legs for example.
NOTE: I actually do my staining before gluing, this helps me have a cleaner look
Step 5: Staining/Finishing

I sand everything up to 180 grit and then wipe it down with a damp cloth. This piece was stained a dark brown mahogany and was almost black at one point.
Then I sanded it down to the bare wood, but was careful to leave the dark stain in the grain to accentuate it. At this point, I stained the wood with a stain mixture I made for myself.
Let's call it a deep reddish brown with golden undertones, shall we? I did it twice and sealed it with amber shellac. That takes away some of the orange. It looks good, but the final touch is for me to add a clear coat.
After the coat has dried, I take my damp stain cloth and lightly glaze the top of the clear coat. I never wet the cloth, it is a dry wipe. This can be a little unsettling, so if you don't feel comfortable skip that step. Next, three more coats of clear are applied.
