Wood and Epoxy Hanging Table for a Living Room, about six months ago we discovered a local sawmill where they had live wood at an excellent price.
We found a really neat piece that we thought would make a great hanging table. The wood has been in my bedroom (where the finished table will sit) since that time.
This gave enough time for the wood to dry and acclimate to the space.
The time has come to make the table and as we portray in this article.
Step 1: Gather Materials

Step 2: Sand the wood

There were a lot of ridges and imperfections on this piece of wood, so I started with 60 grit sandpaper.
I went over the surface many times for a better finish and look.
Step 3: Drill the middle

After it was sanded, I noticed that the center of the wood was raised and looked, not so pretty.
I decided to use a hole saw to cut the center section and then use a jigsaw to clean it up.
Step 4: Top and bottom finishing

We love the look of this wood and wanted to warm it up a bit, so we used shellac to finish it.
Between thin coats I used 220 grit sandpaper and removed the dust with a tack cloth.
I did three coats of shellac on the top and bottom of the wood.
Step 5: Preparation for Epoxy

Now, what to do with the hole in the middle?
I decided to use it as a place to store small items. We thought clear epoxy would be perfect for a better look.
First I cut a piece of contact paper to the size of the hole and then cut a larger piece, placing the hole size on one of the sticky sides and then placed the two adhesive layers down on the wood to seal the holes for the epoxy.
Then I sealed the area with aluminum tape.
Step 6: Attach the rope and swing equipment

We love when a project turns out just as we imagined, if not better.
This is a great table to store some small accessories. One place where we differ in opinion is that I love the movement when they touch the table, but Mom, not so much.
What do you think of the hanging table? Do you love the look or impractical? Let us know in the comments.
