Gunther von Hagens: The Man Who Killed 1990s Shock Art

Gunther von Hagens, the inventor of plastination, will be remembered as the man who killed off 1990s shock art. He certainly plastinated any reputation Damien Hirst had as a disturbing artist of mortality. When this German scientist turned showman made a popular bloodsplash around the world in the latter half of the 90s, Hirst was still pickling sheep, sharks and pigs and displaying them as philosophical specimens. Other artists, too, played with carnality and horror, from endoscopy videos to model landscapes filled with Nazi atrocities. But it was just art. Then along came Von Hagens with his Body Worlds exhibitions, using plastination to perfectly preserve dissected bodies. He did what Hirst and co never dared: he displayed actual human corpses as a kind of grisly but purportedly educational art object.

Edmund Burke, the 18th-century politician and aesthetician, pointed out that if you told a theatre audience watching a tragic drama there was a public hanging outside, everyone would flock to the hanging. To put it another way, the art of horror is a race to the bottom. When Von Hagens offered the public real dead people to gawp at, opened up and preserved in the blood-red flesh, he drew global crowds in the millions, leaving the Hirst generation looking like an elite sideshow. He even staged a live, televised autopsy in London in 2002, reviving the kind of gory spectacle William Hogarth satirised in his print The Reward of Cruelty, which depicts the dissection of a hanged criminal. The difference is that Hogarth sees something monstrous in the cold eyes of the anatomists as they cut up a judicially killed man and even let a dog eat his entrails. That’s the difference between art and plastination. Von Hagens didn’t invite thoughts about mortality. He instead treated human flesh as cheap and meaningless material to be arranged in poses out of old anatomy books.

In all honesty I found Body Worlds repellent. Von Hagens, however, had an impeccable pedigree for what he did. He trained as a pathologist in East Germany, fled to West Germany, and later invented plastination in 1977 at Heidelberg University. His technique replaces body fluids with reactive polymers that harden the tissue, allowing bodies to be posed indefinitely. The first full Body Worlds exhibition opened in Japan in 1995, then toured globally. By 2004, over 20 million people had visited. The medical community debated its educational value. Some praised it for demystifying anatomy; others condemned it as a freak show that commodified death.

The Hirst vs. Von Hagens Showdown

Aspect Damien Hirst Gunther von Hagens
Medium Preserved animals in formaldehyde Plastinated human bodies
Authenticity Dead animals, sometimes synthetic Real human corpses
Artistic intent Philosophical memento mori Educational anatomy display
Public reaction Controversial but accepted as art Shock, revulsion, huge crowds
Key work The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living Body Worlds exhibitions

Why Plastination Changed Everything

Plastination made the unimaginable possible: perfectly preserved human remains that could be posed in lifelike positions—athletes, chess players, even a man holding his own skin. Von Hagens called it “anatomical art.” Critics called it a desecration. The race to the bottom Burke described became literal: once real bodies were on display, artists like Hirst could no longer compete with the raw, visceral experience of actual death.

  • Key takeaway: Von Hagens demolished the line between art and grotesque spectacle.
  • Key takeaway: Body Worlds attracted millions, proving the public craves authenticity over conceptual art.
  • Key takeaway: The live autopsy in 2002 pushed boundaries to their absolute limit.

FAQ

What is plastination?

Plastination is a process invented by Gunther von Hagens that replaces water and fat in biological tissues with polymers, creating durable, odorless specimens that retain their original structure.

Was Body Worlds real human bodies?

Yes, all specimens in Body Worlds came from real human cadavers donated specifically for plastination and education purposes. Von Hagens relied on voluntary body donors.

How is Gunther von Hagens different from Damien Hirst?

Hirst uses dead animals preserved in formaldehyde as art objects; Von Hagens uses real human bodies. Hirst’s work invites philosophical reflection; Von Hagens’ work is a literal display of human anatomy, often seen as more shocking and less artistic.
