Sometimes a mistake turns into an unexpected opportunity. That's exactly what happened when a blacksmith crafted a manhole cover with the wrong dimensions. Instead of letting it go to waste, we turned it into a sturdy iron planter on wheels—perfect for balconies, patios, or gardens. This DIY project shows you how to repurpose heavy-duty materials into a mobile flower pot stand that's both functional and stylish.
Why Build an Iron Planter?

Iron planters are incredibly durable and can withstand the elements, making them ideal for outdoor use. They add a touch of industrial charm to any space, whether you place them on a spacious balcony or in your garden. Plus, with wheels attached, you can easily move your plants to follow the sun or rearrange your outdoor layout.

Step-by-Step: Turning a Cover into a Planter
1. Prepare the Base
The original cover consisted of a thick metal sheet with a tubular iron frame underneath—designed to fit snugly into a manhole. Since the dimensions were wrong, we repurposed the entire piece. If you're building from scratch, consider using a patio furniture base as a starting point.
2. Attach the Wheels
Because the backside of the frame wasn't accessible, riveting was the only option. At each corner of the frame, use the caster plate as a template to mark holes. Drill through the frame with a Ø 5 mm bit. Use only 3 of the 4 holes on each plate. Insert a Ø 4.8 mm rivet into each hole, fit the rivet gun's nozzle over the pin, and squeeze the handles until the rivet head deforms and the pin snaps off. Repeat for all four corners.
For easy mobility, pair your planter with outdoor decor that complements its industrial look.
3. Apply Rust Protection and Paint
Treat the metal with a rust-proof primer, then apply a coat of enamel paint in your preferred color. This step is crucial for longevity, especially if the planter will live outdoors. While you're at it, consider updating your outdoor lighting to highlight your new planter in the evening.
Where to Use Your Iron Planter
This mobile planter is versatile. Use it on a large balcony, in a garden, or even indoors as a statement piece. The wheels make it easy to move your greenery around. Pair it with outdoor sofas for a cohesive patio setup, or place it near a dining table for a fresh, natural touch.
Pro Tip: Styling Your Planter
- Fill with tall grasses or flowering plants for vertical interest.
- Combine with outdoor rugs to define the space.
- Use pergolas or gazebos to create a shaded plant nook.
