DIY Toy Excavator: How to Build One for Kids

When you decide to give a gift to your children or grandchildren, you might end up choosing something predictable or ordinary from what the market offers. To avoid this risk, you can opt to build a custom toy excavator just for them. Using various leftover 40 mm square tubing from previous projects and taking inspiration from real excavators, you can construct a rectangular base with wheels at the ends to move the toy around.

At the center of the frame, weld a pivot pin onto which a larger-diameter tube is inserted to support the excavator. This consists of a central body with a seat, arm, forearm, bucket, and control levers with their respective tie rods, plus a central joint that allows the arm to be folded back toward the seat to reduce its footprint when not in use.

Cutting, Bending, and Lots of Welding

To build the base, cut five pieces of 40×40 mm square tubing to form two side rails, then weld three crossbars inside them. On the central crossbar, weld a piece of water pipe perpendicularly. On the lower ends of the side rails, cut slots to insert Ø 50 mm plastic wheels. Secure them with screws that pass through the thickness of the square tubing, drilled 10 mm from the edges and centered on the slots.

The movable rail that supports everything has a lowered tip where the arm articulates. On the bottom face, weld a second tube with a larger diameter than the first one perpendicularly—the first tube must fit inside it to allow rotation. The seat is made of plastic and is fixed to the rail at a height that allows the child to force rotation with their feet on the ground.

The toy excavator's arm is built with two shaped elements to achieve the classic angle. At the ends of the vertical sides, weld four pieces of 40×8 mm flat iron protruding outward, with holes at the edges to house the pivot pins.

Building the Bucket and Control System

To make the bucket, you'll need to cut and bend sheet metal into the typical excavator bucket shape. Weld it to the end of the arm assembly, ensuring it can pivot freely. The control levers are made from smaller-diameter tubing, connected to the arm and bucket via steel cables or rods. This allows the child to operate the excavator just like the real thing.

Articulation Locking System

One clever feature of this DIY toy excavator is the articulation locking system. A simple pin-and-hole mechanism on the central joint lets you lock the arm in place when not in use or during transport. This reduces the toy's overall size and makes it easier to store. To implement this, drill a series of holes along the joint's rotation arc and use a removable metal pin—similar to a hitch pin—to secure the position.

This ride-on excavator is designed for children aged 3 to 8 years old, but always supervise younger kids during play.

Can I modify the design for a larger child?

Yes, you can scale up the dimensions by using larger tubing and wheels. Just ensure all moving parts remain safe and sturdy.

Do I need professional welding skills?

Basic welding experience is sufficient for this project. If you're a beginner, practice on scrap metal first and consider taking a short welding course.

Where can I find the materials?

Most materials are available at hardware stores or metal suppliers. For convenience, you can also find home improvement tools and supplies online to help with the build.

Enhance Your DIY Workshop

Building this toy excavator is a rewarding project that combines creativity, engineering, and craftsmanship. To make the process smoother, consider upgrading your workspace with quality workshop lighting for better visibility during detailed welding. A sturdy workbench is also essential for assembly and finishing touches.

Once the excavator is complete, you might want to create a dedicated play area. Adding outdoor patio furniture nearby lets you relax while the kids play. For storage, a garden shed can keep the toy protected from the elements when not in use.
