Making a DIY wooden chain and padlock is mostly a work of carving and sanding; the wood must be well-seasoned and the blades continuously sharpened. The roughing out of the strip and, in part, the rings can also be done with a mallet, chisel, and fret saw.

DIY Wooden Chain: A Slow Carving Work

DIY project photo
Creating a wooden chain is not simple: masters of this art have always been the Japanese and Chinese who, in ivory, managed to build a sphere containing another sphere containing another sphere containing another sphere containing another (see an example here). We don't know how long it took them, but certainly much longer than it took our reader Paolo Pistecchia to make this DIY wooden chain. It is carved from a 30x30x300 mm spruce strip, enriched with a "padlock" cage that holds a ball—a less difficult job than it might seem, but with great effect that demonstrates the maker's skill. Spruce, in fact, is not the ideal wood for making a wooden chain because it has long fibers and wide grain. More suitable are cirmolo, linden, jelutong, and, above all, boxwood, which however quickly dulls the knife edge, so you spend more time sharpening than cutting. To make a wooden chain, few and inexpensive tools are needed, almost all manual, but above all you need calm, patience, and a steady hand when making cuts. A moment of tiredness, a cut that is too decisive, can compromise three or four hours of work in less than a second.

How to Build a Wooden Chain

The work requires an exact marking on the blank of the separation cuts between the links, in staggered pairs on adjacent faces. The depth of the cuts determines the thickness of the rings. To create the chain, you first work with a saw to rough out the links, then with a knife or chisel to give them a cross-section (marked by the cuts).

Step-by-Step Illustrated Guide

  • Step 1: Mark the wood. Use a pencil and square to mark the separation cuts on the strip, alternating on each face. Precision is key here—consider using a work surface to keep everything steady.
  • Step 2: Rough out the links. With a fine-tooth saw, cut along the marked lines. Don't cut too deep; you'll refine the shape later. A good shed or workshop space helps keep your projects organized.
  • Step 3: Carve the cross-section. Use a sharp knife or chisel to shape each link into a rounded or square cross-section. Sanding blocks from our home improvement range can help smooth rough edges.
  • Step 4: Free the links. Carefully cut away the excess wood between links, working slowly to avoid breaking them. A good task light is essential for seeing fine details.
  • Step 5: Sand and finish. Use fine-grit sandpaper to smooth all surfaces. Apply a wood finish like linseed oil or wax for protection. For display, consider a wall decor shelf or shadow box.

Tools You'll Need

  • Fine-tooth saw or fret saw
  • Sharp carving knife or chisel
  • Mallet (optional for chisel work)
  • Sandpaper (various grits)
  • Measuring tools (ruler, square)
  • Sturdy workbench or desk

Frequently Asked Questions

What type of wood is best for a wooden chain?

Softwoods like linden, cirmolo, or jelutong are ideal because they carve easily and resist splitting. Boxwood is excellent but hard on tools. Avoid woods with long fibers like spruce, which can break during carving. For outdoor projects, consider garden supplies like treated lumber.

How long does it take to make a wooden chain?

Depending on complexity and experience, a simple chain of 5-10 links can take 4-8 hours. A more elaborate piece with a padlock or cage might take 10-20 hours. Patience is key—rushing leads to mistakes. Set up a comfortable office chair or stool for long carving sessions.

Can I make a wooden chain without power tools?

Absolutely! Traditional wooden chains are made entirely with hand tools: a saw, knife, chisel, and sandpaper. This makes it a great project for beginners or those who enjoy handcrafting. For lighting, a good desk lamp helps with precision.

How do I prevent the chain from breaking?

Work slowly and carefully, especially when freeing links. Keep your tools sharp to make clean cuts. Use a wood with tight grain and no knots. If you're new to carving, practice on scrap wood first. A storage bench can hold your supplies within reach.

What can I do with a finished wooden chain?
