Saviez-vous que l'échappement à ancre est une invention anglaise ? Ou que les premiers chronomètres de marine étaient également une affaire britannique ? S'il existe une tradition horlogère qui pourrait (et devrait) faire l'envie des autres, c'est bien celle de l'Angleterre, développée dans le feu des campagnes de conquêtes et d'annexions de l'empire de Sa Gracieuse Majesté. Tompion, Harrison, Mudge, Arnold et, plus récemment, George Daniels (inventeur de l'échappement coaxial adopté par Omega) sont des exemples d'illustres horlogers. Sachant cela, il semble moins étrange que Bremont soit, mais surtout se revendique, une entreprise horlogère britannique. Nous avons découvert tout cela lors de la présentation de Bremont à The Watch Gallery.

Comme si cela ne suffisait pas, les fondateurs s'appellent English, ce qui a en quelque sorte dissipé les doutes. Ingénieurs de profession et aviateurs par passion, Giles et Nick English sont l'âme de Bremont, une jeune entreprise qu'ils ont créée de toutes pièces à partir d'une expérience de vie traumatisante : la mort de leur père dans un accident d'avion dont Nick a réchappé de justesse. La vie est courte, ont-ils appris, et il faut poursuivre ses rêves, aussi fous puissent-ils paraître. Ils ont commencé à assembler des montres à Bienne, en Suisse, et aujourd'hui, ils affirment fièrement que toutes les montres Bremont sont assemblées à Henley-on-Thames, dans le sud de l'Oxfordshire.

Et que font-ils chez Bremont ? Des montres, évidemment. Comme s'il n'y avait pas assez d'offre. Il est également évident qu'il faut trouver (ou directement créer) un créneau de marché pour une nouvelle proposition qui arrive de surcroît sur un marché saturé. Et c'est dans cette « britannicité » que Bremont trouve sa raison d'être. Et tout ce qui est britannique ou susceptible d'être identifié comme tel trouve sa place chez Bremont. Du fabricant de sièges éjectables d'avion Martin Baker à la glorieuse Jaguar et ses E-Types, bien qu'en affichant la longue amitié entre la Grande-Bretagne et les États-Unis, ils ont étendu leur collaboration à Boeing ou à la Coupe de l'America elle-même.

Une autre caractéristique de Bremont est l'incorporation de petits morceaux d'objets historiques dans leurs montres. Des morceaux de tissu de l'aile du Kitty Hawk (l'avion des frères Wright (ils étaient américains)) aux véritables roues de la machine Enigma pour le rotor Codebreaker, un hommage à Bletchley Park. Ce n'est pas nouveau : Romain Jerome a commencé avec de l'acier du Titanic ou de la poussière de lune (sans parler des coprolithes de dinosaures...), même si personnellement, je trouve ce que fait Bremont plus romantique.

Il a récemment eu lieu à The Watch Gallery de Barcelone leur dernière présentation par Giles English : dans la continuité de leur association avec la Coupe de l'America (qui s'avère être de fabrication britannique, la coupe), ils lancent la collection Regatta, qui dispose du compteur caractéristique de compte à rebours de 15 minutes et de cinq minutes de « temps de départ ». Comme je l'ai déjà mentionné auparavant, cette série limitée (235 exemplaires avec un cadran noir et 235 autres exemplaires avec un cadran blanc) aura de la fibre de carbone dans sa couronne provenant des dérives de l'Oracle Team USA AC72, qui en 2013 a battu l'Emirates de Nouvelle-Zélande après avoir remporté 8 courses consécutives alors qu'il était sur le point d'être disqualifié.
