Are you ready for the big reveal of what it looks like today?

Well, right?

The first thing we had to do before we could even think about starting on the built-in shelves was paint the room. I thought it would be fun to highlight some of the different tools I use for painting as we progress through this project.

Since we were doing two different colors on the walls here, we ran into an interesting problem: it seemed more optimal to do it with a roller.

And finally, to paint the built-in shelves, I used a combination of my Wagner FLEXiO 3000 and an old regular paintbrush.

Because I was painting it in place, I wasn't able to spray all of the built-in components like I normally would, but I decided to give the sprayer a try in the name of a smoother finish. And I'm so glad I did!

All I had to do was take a little extra time to tape it around the bed (I used this duct tape, which has a tissue attached to it and is super helpful) and made sure to hold my sprayer close to the bed as I was working to reduce overspray.

I was able to paint the bed as much as possible with the sprayer (and lots of painter's tape!), which means the most visible part is sure to have a perfectly smooth finish.

I used a brush to get rid of any hard-to-reach spots that the sprayer couldn't get with the bed in place, and I'm very pleased with how it turned out.

Once the room was painted, we were finally ready to start building.

I'll do my best to give you a solid tutorial on how we built this bed (since it goes wall to wall), which means the measurements will be a little different for each room you're working on!

Materials and tools:

• 2 IKEA BILLY Shelves
• 1/2″ Plywood (we used about 3 sheets)
• 2X4 wood (we use approximately 5)
• Kreg Jig Tool
• Wood glue
• Nail gun
• Cut out the pieces (we used 3/4″ thick lattice pieces for most of our ornaments, along with some shoe molds)
• Wood putty (because no one is perfect)
  Wagner FLEXiO 3000 paint sprayer
• Painting

STEP 1: Build boxes to lift the shelves

Our first step was to build some boxes on each side that would raise the shelves. We made the base of the boxes the exact size of the bookcases we were using (so they would sit perfectly without overlapping) and measured the height of our ceiling to make sure they were exactly high enough.

We used our Kreg Jig tool to build the boxes and put them in place once they were finished (as you can see in the photo above, on the side that is against the wall we just used 2x4s for support in place of the additional plywood).

STEP 2: Build the supports
Next, it's time to frame the bed.

We started with a 2X4 along the back of the bed (we installed it at the exact height we needed based on the baskets we would use for the front nooks), be sure to take the width of your plywood into account when measuring.

So, three M-shaped supports were made using the 2X4 and our trusty Kreg Jig tool to act as the base of the bed. He installed another 2X4 across the bed at the back of the storage nooks we would eventually come across (we measured these nooks to fit perfectly with the baskets we chose). You will see that support in the following photos:

STEP 3: Assemble the bed using plywood

Once the supports were in place, we framed the corners and front of the bed with plywood.

Plywood was used to construct the platform and the framing of the bed itself: it consists of a large piece of plywood for the bottom and two small boxes on either side that are essentially there to fill the space between the mattress and the spaces.

The shelves (we had about a foot of extra space, so we made these little bases on each side of the mattress. We also built a narrow lip at the front of the bed to help keep the mattress in place.

STEP 4: Add Bed Platform and Trim

At this point, the bed was essentially finished, although it still seemed a long way from being finished! Fortunately, putty and wood trim help make things look better.

I filled all the obvious gaps with wood filler and sanded them, then we trimmed everything out; Basically, anywhere two pieces of wood met, we added trim.

We also used some thick edges between the shelves and the boxes they sit on to hide the hole in the back of the shelves (which is there to account for the baseboards when the shelves are placed on the floor).

STEP 5: Caulk and paintra!
Finally, I caulked everything (which is exhausting but very satisfying!) and gave it a couple coats of paint! Instead of spending a ton of time trying to find the perfect color, we simply grab one of the shelves, take it to our local hardware store, and ask them to color match us. At first the guy at the paint counter tried to say we should get white paint, but we assured him that white wasn't white, so he agreed to color match, and it's a perfect match!

This bed took a lot of work, but it was worth it. I'm so happy with how it turned out and I can't wait to get started on the other rooms..

The fun part! Now that the bed is complete, we're ready to start doing some decorating.
