How to Renew Furniture with the Aged Effect Patina, that paint that transforms the original appearance of surfaces, generally made of wood or metal, giving an aged appearance... The best of all is that in addition to being versatile and combining in practically all environments, it still fits in all pockets. Do you know about that piece of furniture that is already old, marked or peeling? The technique is optimal for recovering pieces that are in a more worn state, but that you really like and don't want to get rid of:

Step 1: Measure your pieces and clean well

There are several types of patinas, but Provençal is one of the simplest to make. The main characteristic is that the surface of the furniture is completely painted, while the corners and edges have a worn appearance.
Another highlight: the background is always dark brown, because it would be the original color of the wood, and the coverage is normally white or some very light color. Write down the necessary materials and have fun:
- Three types of sandpaper: Coarse, medium and fine
- A round brush, a small flat brush and a wide flat brush
- A rough sponge, a soft fabric and steel No. 00 and No. 000
- White PVA paint
- Paint in two tones, one lighter (preferably white) and another a little darker, in the desired color
- The first step is to sand the piece well.
Step 2: Prepare everything for painting

The second step is to prepare the furniture for the final painting. With the round brush, apply the white PVA base over the entire piece. There's no need for the paint to be perfect, but don't leave any wood grooves. Even paint the reliefs and holes. Wait 3 to 5 hours to dry in the shade. After dry, use the steel wool to sand again. Afterwards, clean well with a damp cloth.
Step 3: Painting

Step 3 is to actually start the painting. Using the large flat brush, paint the entire piece of furniture with the white (or lighter) paint.
In cracks and reliefs use the narrow flat brush. Let it dry well, if necessary for up to two days. After it is dry, with the narrow brush, paint with the darker paint the reliefs and the points where you want to highlight the wear.
Step 4: Wearing the piece

After the furniture is dry, it is time to finally give it the worn effect. Use the steel sponge once again and remove the layers of paint, with less force where you want the white to remain, and with more force where you want the wood to appear more.
This is what will give the "old" effect to your furniture. Don't worry that the effect will not be uniform and that is the idea. If you want to give an even more aged look to the piece, dilute your lighter paint a little in the water.
Using the wide brush, dab the furniture and immediately wipe off the excess with a dry cloth. After dry, use fine sandpaper to thoroughly abrade the reliefs, edges and corners of your piece, leaving the wood clearly visible.
About the paintings

Write down some tips to make your job easier:
- Water-based enamel paint: A great option. It does not have a strong smell and dries quickly.
- Shinier effect: If you like this effect, opt for satin polish, which provides a semi-gloss finish.
- Paint for crafts: You can also choose the most common paints, which perform better and have more affordable prices. They are sold in larger quantities.
About colors

Of course you have poetic license to leave your furniture any color you want, but the Provençal style uses white as the predominant color. The combination with pastel tones looks nice in this patina style.
About how to paint

Avoid brushing in the same place too many times, as the brush begins to remove fresh paint that has already been applied. Make back and forth movements, covering one part, and then move on to the other surface, still without paint.
About scraping

To scrape, in addition to the steel wool and sandpaper, you can also use waxes. Each of these elements provides a different effect.
Glass is a very interesting option, mainly for scraping the corners and screens of the furniture, since the paint comes off super easily. However, do not forget to wear special gloves so as not to risk cutting yourself.
