How to Make a Wooden Rug 2026

Have you ever thought, "Hmm, I wonder if a rug could be made of wood?" Well, I, and subsequently, have made one.

Using rectangular shaped blocks of premium walnut wood, rope and aluminum pipes, I designed and happily stood on a wooden mat.

Step 1: Measurement and cutting

I had two 8-foot planks of walnut wood, which were about 5 inches wide. I decided I wanted simple rectangular blocks for the rug, so I chose a 5 x 2.5 inch rectangle.

The best tool for making about 40 of these rectangular blocks is probably a chop saw. As you can see in the pictures, I started using a band saw, but it took too long, and the cuts obviously weren't wonderfully straight.

I cut about 40 of these bad boys, then sanded them to a smooth finish.

Step 2: Drilling

After playing around with different configurations, I decided to go with a brick-like staggered pattern for interest and movement.

I would be using strong 1/2 inch cotton rope to hold the blocks together, but since I wanted the top of the rug to be smooth, I would need to punch holes in the sides of the blocks, thread the rope through these holes. For a flawless carpet surface.

Since my blocks were 5 inches wide, I would drill two holes in the sides of the blocks, both at the 1 inch mark on each side. This way the staggered configuration could stay strong.

I used a drill to make the holes and a drill bit that was slightly larger in diameter than my rope. I made a quick jig on the drill press that would allow me to simply insert a block and press down, creating a precise hole. Otherwise you would spend hours measuring and marking perfectly where the holes should go. This saved me a ton of time since I would be making 2 holes per 40 blocks. Oh!

Step 3: Grease

After I had drilled all the holes, I decided to get my money's worth by bringing out the beautiful grain of the walnut wood. I used Boos Lock Mistery Oil to achieve this. This is phenomenal! I sprayed the oil onto the surface of the walnut blocks, stained it, and wiped off the excess. I did about 3 layers of this, remembering not to neglect the edges! This step was really rewarding! Look at the amazing color!

Step 4: Cut the aluminum tubes

So although the rope would hold the blocks together, you would still need something to allow space between the blocks. Initially, I thought I would tie knots in the rope between the strands, but this proved unwieldy and cumbersome, so I decided to go with small pieces of aluminum tubing. I made sure the gauge was correct for the diameter of the string. It was, and so I cut loads of 3/4 inch aluminum pipe. Once this step was completed, I could finally start threading my rug!

Step 5: Threading

Taking all my materials, wooden blocks, ropes and aluminum tubes, I could start threading!

First, I wrapped duct tape around the end of my rope and would use the thread. This would ensure that it would not unravel and would make threading quick and painless. I even made a narrower edge so it looked like a needle.

Turning between a block and a tube, at first I threaded a column of 4 blocks, but because I wanted an amazing pattern, I gave the second column 5 blocks and kept alternating this way until I finished my blocks. In the end I only used 36 of my blocks and 56 tubes.

I wanted a handmade feel, so on the two ends, I simply knotted and cut the rope.

And here we have it! A beautiful and unique wooden rug. I think it would look even better if done on a larger scale, but for my needs, my final dimensions of 36 inches square were perfect.
