Learn what types of sealants to use depending on the job, the sealant is used to finish the joints, prevent moisture from entering and fill gaps. It's stretchy, so it offers some wiggle room. The sealant is sold in tubes and cartridges. One cartridge is usually enough for a joint about 12-13 m long, with a thickness of 5 mm.

What type of sealant to use?
The composition of the sealant determines its elasticity and how quickly it hardens. For general use, a universal sealant is sufficient. In the bathroom and other areas with a lot of moisture, it is best to use a mold-resistant sealant.
This prevents the joints from blackening over time. Please note that there are sealers that can be painted over and others that cannot be painted over.

Union
Not all types of sealant are suitable for every job. For example, acrylic sealant is not suitable for use on glass, tiles and other smooth surfaces, while bituminous sealants, silicone rubber and Teflon offer greater adhesion on bituminous surfaces and roofs.
In some cases, adhesion can be improved by first applying a coat of primer.

Paint over a sealer
Most sealants are white, gray, black, brown or clear. You can choose the color closest to the surface in question, or paint the sealant the same color as the surface.
Check the sealer's instructions first to see if it can be painted over. If you plan to paint over the sealant, remember that paint is not elastic, so it may crack if there is any movement at the joint.

Oxidation
If the sealant contains any acidic components, it is possible that the surface on which it has been applied will suffer oxidation.
This can occur on mirrors, stone and marble slabs, aluminum or copper. If you want to ensure this doesn't happen, opt for a non-acidic sealer. You can easily check this by smelling the bottom of the cartridge.

Clean the surface
If you want to fill a crack in the corner of a wall, you will first need to remove all the loose material with a triangular putty knife or a sharp knife. Then clean the gap with a brush or vacuum cleaner.
You should also remove any remaining glue, sealant or oil using alcohol or degreaser.

Masking tape
If you want to get the cleanest result possible and you don't know if you can apply the sealant in a perfectly straight line (especially in hard-to-reach places), it is best to use masking tape.
Apply the tape so that it covers both sides of the line you need to seal and remove it before the sealant dries.

Using the sealing cartridge
Use a utility knife to remove the cartridge seal. Next, cut off the tip of the applicator nozzle. It should be a small cut so that the sealant line is thin. If you cut a large part of the nozzle, the sealant line will be wider.
The line of sealant should be 1 or 2 mm wider than the gap you need to fill.
Next, load the cartridge into the gun. When you pull the trigger, the applicator nozzle will fill with sealant. Stop squeezing as soon as you see the sealant coming out.

Make the seal
The best working position is to hold the gun at a 45° angle and move the gun toward you. To apply the sealant evenly, you will need to find the appropriate working speed. If the movement is too slow, the sealing surface will be uneven and uneven and waste sealant. If it's too fast, it won't fill the gap well.
When you reach the end of the gap, release the trigger and press the button or lever on the back of the gun.
This will release the pressure and the sealant flow will stop immediately. OfIf you do not do this, sealant will continue to come out of the nozzle.

Finish off the sealant line
Put soap and water in the sink or basin, moisten a finger with a little soapy water and even out the line of sealant. The soap will prevent the sealant from sticking to your finger. You can also apply some soapy water with a spray bottle. Remove any remaining sealant with the soapy water. Once the sealant has dried, you can remove it with a knife and a hard sponge. Also available are special spatulas and cleaners to apply and remove sealant.
