Making a wood finish using candle wax can be a clever DIY job you can do to improve the look of your home.
My bathroom was designed with the towel bar as far away from the shower as possible.
I put a couple of hooks nearby to fix that.
Over time, the hooks came loose. They still did the job but they looked horrible.
With a little poplar and a candle I made it look incredible.
Some good things about making a candle finish:
- No harmful fumes.
- It is not toxic
- The application is fast and simple.
- It's cheap! (One candle makes many projects).
Steps to make a wood finish with candle wax

I'll take you through the entire project, but if you just want the polishing part, skip to step 3.
Step 1: Cut and shape

I used the hook to guess a measurement of how tall the wood backrest should be. I just wanted it a little higher than the hook itself. After cutting the wood, I rounded off the edge with a 3/8″ router bit. You can see the locations of the old hooks in the last 2 photos.
Step 2: Add the device

Using my trusty square I marked pilot holes for the equipment. I drilled six holes and countersunk two to mount it to the wall. Those will eventually be covered by the hooks. Before continuing, I sanded it with 220 grit sandpaper.
Step 3: Wax wood

To make this, I used a white candle, a propane torch, and a heat gun. The torch melts the candle wax quickly. Once there was a line down the center, I used a sponge applicator to spread it out. Since it is wax, it solidifies when cold.
To aid application I used a heat gun. Do not use a torch to heat the wax on the wood. You could burn it.
Step 4: Burnish the wood

When the wood is evenly coated, load a paper towel with wax. Do this by dripping the melted wax directly onto the towel. Rub the waxed towel in small circles over the entire surface.
Step 5: Polish wood

By now you should have a glow built up. Finish by polishing the wood with a few drops of water and a cotton cloth.
Note: Don't wear the shirt your wife gave you for Christmas while doing this. Wax is difficult to remove from clothing.
