AMD brings Ryzen AI to desktop PCs with AM5 and NPU 50 TOPS 2026

As part of MWC 2026, AMD announced its first desktop processors called “Ryzen AI” for socket AM5, launching for the first time in desktop systems higher performance NPUs and related marking.

The new Ryzen AI 400-series are aimed at local execution of language models and image generation, rather than using servers, and are direct replacements for the Ryzen 8000G, not the Ryzen 9000 series.

The new family combines Zen 5 CPU cores, RDNA 3.5 GPU cores and an NPU with a performance of 50 trillion operations per second (TOPS). With this specification, these are AMD's first desktop chips to qualify for Microsoft's Copilot+ PC badge, which enables some exclusive Windows 11 features such as Recall and Click to Do.

The initial announcement includes six models, split into 65W and 35W default TDP versions. 65W includes the Ryzen AI 7 Pro 450G, Ryzen AI 5 Pro 440G and Ryzen AI 5 Pro 435G, while low-power “GE” variants are also available at 35W. All chips are also branded “Ryzen Pro”, with support for device management features important to corporate computers managed by IT departments.

At this stage, boxed versions for ordinary consumers do not seem to be foreseen. Ryzen AI desktop processors are expected to appear mainly in professional PCs that do not need a separate graphics card, but benefit from more powerful integrated graphics than those offered by standard Ryzen desktop CPUs.

Like previous G-series Ryzen chips, the new processors are essentially laptop processors “repackaged” for desktop systems. They share most of their features with the Ryzen AI 300 for laptops, although AMD uses the name Ryzen AI 400-series for the desktop series. The overall picture of the two generations is described as similar, with the difference that the Ryzen AI 400-series for laptops have slightly faster NPUs at 55 TOPS.

AMD, however, is currently not bringing its top-of-the-line laptop silicon to the desktop. None of the new models reach the 12 CPU cores found in the Ryzen AI 9 HX 375 or 370, and the integrated Radeon 880M or Radeon 890M GPUs are not offered either. The three announced models come with up to 8 CPU cores — likely split between a faster Zen 5 and more efficient Zen 5c — and an integrated Radeon 860M with 8 RDNA 3.5 graphics cores.

The presentation is in line with what AMD had announced at CES earlier in the year as mild iterations of existing technology. The company places the new series mainly in the field of business desktops, emphasizing the combination of Zen 5, RDNA 3.5 and NPU 50 TOPS on an AM5 platform, with the aim of marking Copilot+ PC on Windows 11.
