Chinese scientists create self-charging smartwatches! 2026

Chinese scientists have succeeded in creating the first rubber band that converts body heat into electricity, paving the way for smart watches that will charge from our bodies. This will be able to revolutionize wearables! According to the researchers, the new material combines elasticity with the efficient conversion of heat into electricity. "Until now, all reported high-performance thermoelectric materials have only achieved flexibility, rather than elasticity," they wrote in a paper published in the scientific journal Nature last month. Even today, mobile devices need bulky batteries or fairly frequent charging, but Chinese scientists are looking for a solution that will eliminate the need for charging, at least not in the traditional way. This can be achieved by using the thermoelectric laws, according to which temperature differences can produce energy, just as Watt's steam engine converted the heat of boiling water into energy, paving the way for the first steam engines. Since the human body temperature is usually around 37 degrees Celsius (98.6 Fahrenheit) and ambient temperatures typically range from 20 to 30 degrees, the Chinese team tried to harness the temperature difference and convert it into electricity. Thermoelectric materials have been used for several years. Space probes for example, rely on a thermoelectric generator of radioactive isotopes to have power when solar energy is not available.

But this is the first time we've seen the concept of thermoelectric rubber, according to Peking University's Leo Ting. But all of these are either inorganic materials that are very hard like stones, or organic materials that, although softer, perform very poorly when stretched, according to Lei Ting. The team of Chinese scientists is trying to create a material that will bend and stretch while remaining attached to the skin. "Such thermal devices are comfortable to use and efficiently convert the body's thermal energy into electrical energy with less heat loss," Ting said. In fact, unless the material breaks down or is seriously damaged, it will continue to provide energy indefinitely. The key innovation comes from the hybrid structure that mixes and interconnects semiconducting polymers, with elastic rubber. The researchers engineered a network of nanofibers within the material, which achieves an unprecedented level of elasticity while maintaining high electrical conductivity. The scientists observed that the new material could be stretched up to 850% of its original length, while after being stretched to 150%, it was able to recover more than 90% of its original shape, a level comparable to that of natural rubber. Special additives or dopants – a small amount of a substance added to a material to change its physical properties – further enhanced the performance, resulting in thermoelectric properties at room temperature that rival conventional inorganic materials of this type. "It's not just about charging mobile devices," Lei said, pointing to a much wider range of potential applications. One of the examples he gave is powering communications equipment in remote areas by simply lighting a fire. But the team plans to incorporate the new material into clothing as well, which could charge our cell phone while it's in our pocket or simply regulate body temperature, using its semiconductor wires to transfer heat to the outside of the clothing and, by extension, into the air. The possible implementations are endless, from medicine to products for the public, anything that needs enough energy from a large battery could be replaced by the new technology, to provide electricity!
