Pettichat: An AI collar that translates your pets' barks and meows 2026

A startup from China has manufactured a light collar for dogs and cats, which with the help of artificial intelligence, turns barks and meows into short sentences, on our phone. The reason for the Pettichat, a collar weighing only 27 grams, which goes around the neck of our beloved friend. It records the sounds our animals make through built-in microphones, while it also has sensors that monitor the animal's posture, along with other physical signs.

The entire system behind Pettichat is based on Alibaba cloud's Qwen model, which has been trained with millions of speech samples from pets, collected for many studies over many years. These studies tried to determine what the animals wanted to say with these sounds. The team behind Pettichat combined each of the voices with a specific behavior according to the environment in which it occurred. In this way, the collar transmits to the application signals such as "I'm hungry", "I want a ride" or "I want a toy". But at the same time, the collar also works the other way around, translating commands given by the owner into sounds that the animals understand and respond to.

Meng Xiaoyi, the company behind the collar, claims that their AI model can detect more than twenty different emotions with an astonishing 94.6% accuracy. The negative, however, is that the tests have been carried out by the company itself and so far have not been confirmed by an independent laboratory. At the same time, no study has been published on the new technology to be evaluated by the scientific community. At the same time, other sounds from the environment or from other animals can disrupt the system's operation.

So far though, it has been embraced a lot by the Chinese market since pre-orders opened a few days ago. The company has received tens of thousands of orders, with the collar costing around 100 euros. Deliveries have already started in China and on May 30 orders will open for more countries.

As an idea it seems great, but whether it works is something that remains to be discovered. For now, thousands of Chinese people who have bought the collar are waiting for their dog to bark to see if it will translate them correctly.
