Quedan literalmente horas para que Baselworld 2017 abra sus puertas y las mayores expectativas están en saber si encontraremos todas las marcas que anunciaron su presencia. Muchas (generalmente pequeñas) ya dijeron al final de la edición anterior que no contarían con ellas este año. Otras, más grandes, decidieron dar el paso y asistir al SIHH celebrado en Ginebra en enero y abandonar Basilea. Sea como fuere, la verdad es que el área habilitada se ha reducido. Quedaron atrás los tiempos en que había cola para encontrar unos metros para exponer, cuando quien dejaba un año no tenía garantizado regresar al siguiente.

También será interesante ver si se consolida la tendencia detectada en Ginebra, a saber, el deseo de ofrecer precios más asequibles por parte de los fabricantes (perdón, Maisons) que hasta ahora solo sabían aumentarlos. No importaba si los costos subían o se mantenían: la razón era más de marketing que económica porque caro, como sabemos, es bueno. Para dar un par de ejemplos, en el SIHH Jaeger LeCoultre sorprendió con una colección Master a precios inferiores a 8.000 €, y Girard Perregaux (uno de los "desertores" de Baselworld) anunció la creación de un nuevo segmento de precios entre 5.000 € y 10.000 € que no tenía hasta ahora.

Y es que, ni mucho menos, es algo del otro mundo. El grupo Swatch se presenta con algunas heridas graves considerando que sus marcas más populares (las que, en definitiva, tiran del carro) han experimentado importantes descensos de ventas. Hamilton, Tissot, y en menor medida Longines no han estado a la altura de lo esperado (lo esperado por la dirección comercial) y tienen que recomponer urgentemente sus estrategias. Se había culpado al Grupo Swatch de una falta de reacción ante los relojes inteligentes (o "conectados") y parece que finalmente revelará novedades al respecto, ya que acaba de anunciar un diminuto chip con ¡cinco millones de transistores! No sé si será demasiado tarde, porque TAG-Heuer, ese gigante renacido de la mano de JC Biver, ya ha presentado su segundo Connected que, cumpliendo su promesa, unirá lo mejor de ambos mundos en un solo reloj.

Cabe decir que fue precisamente TAG-Heuer quien - sin perder sus anillos - anunció una reubicación de su oferta, situándola claramente a la baja y ofreciendo nuevamente relojes (de cuarzo, por supuesto) por debajo del límite psicológico de 1.000 €. Este año, y visto el éxito del H-01, presentarán la versión de 43 mm y la versión definitiva del remake del Autavia, para lo cual ya han convocado a la Prensa. Queda por ver qué nos tiene preparado Zenith, con la reciente irrupción -literalmente- de Biver y sus chicos en la dirección general.

Hay dos marcas que no parecen verse afectadas por ningún tipo de crisis -al menos seriamente- y que además tienen en común que no revelan sus novedades hasta la apertura de la feria. Una se llama Patek Philippe, que se permite caprichos (para ellos lo son) como ofrecer relojes de acero en un universo de metales preciosos. Lo hizo hace tres años y no me sorprendería que volviera a la carga, porque Thierry Stern – su presidente, hijo y nieto de presidentes – quiere dejar su propia huella antes de que… el tiempo, que es de lo que se trata.

La otra marca-mito, Rolex, es si cabe aún más hermética en cuanto a novedades. Y como muestra, un botón: en la apertura de la feria (un día antes, solo para Prensa) minutos antes de las doce del mediodía, uno encuentra sus vitrinas exteriores cubiertas por cortinas que suben automáticamente a las doce en punto, pero no antes. Hace años, en la era del papel, esto no tenía mucha importancia, pero sabiendo que hoy una imagen puede estar circulando por las redes en cuestión de segundos y la expectación que generan sus novedades, en Rolex prefieren actuar así. ¿Y qué novedades habrá? El año pasado acerté con la presentación del Daytona de acero cerámico (y consiguiente desaparición del modelo totalmente de acero), pero prefiero que me pregunten por el tiempo en las Islas Malvinas (o las Comoras, que da igual) antes que arriesgarme a hacer un pronóstico sobre la marca de la corona. Lo que apuesto (vamos, sí, me arriesgo) es porque *no* van a presentar un Pepsi (GMT con bisel rojo-azul) en acero. El Coke (bisel negro-rojo) sería una jugada muy arriesgada. Y la grande: viendo el último teaser en Instagram, ¿podríamos estar ante la primera prueba contrarreloj de Cellini?

El que realmente me tiene en vilo es Tudor. Hace tres años se dieron cuenta de que su tesoro residía en sus catálogos anteriores a 1970 y, aunque es una conclusión poco original, lo cierto es que están triunfando con cada novedad. La última fue el Pelagos "left handed" (con la corona a la izquierda) y tengo la sensación de que este año quieren dar un golpe en la mesa. A ver si encuentran una vía alternativa y salvan el pequeño fracaso comercial que fue el North Flag, el primer modelo en montar su propio calibre pero que no se referenciaba en modelos antiguos, o el Black Shield, que han pasado sin pena ni gloria.

Volviendo al grupo Swatch, queda por ver qué trae Omega más allá de la enésima celebración del Speedmaster (sesenta años ya, la criatura). El año pasado presentaron hasta 66 (sesenta y seis) novedades y, si han leído el mensaje correctamente, este año debería haber considerablemente menos. Glashütte Original, Breguet y Blancpain siguen jugando en su propia liga, con producciones relativamente cortas (entre las tres apenas superarán la de Patek Philippe, más de 60.000 unidades) y dirigidas a mercados en cierto estado de postración -al menos las dos últimas- tienen que seguir creando maravillas pase lo que pase.

Recientemente se rumoreó la posible venta de Breitling, aunque no se dijo a quién ni por cuánto. Y dado que su situación es muy similar a la de otras dos marcas que se habían quedado sin sus promotores visionarios y que han pasado a manos del grupo Kering (y al SIHH, abandonando Baselworld 2017), no descartaría novedades en ese sentido.
