Repairing air mattresses is an easy task that you can do yourself easily and efficiently from the comfort of your home.
Is that an air mattress leak I hear? Don't worry, you can fix your air mattress with a common bicycle tube repair kit and some sandpaper.
All in less than 10 minutes!
Step 1: Tools + Materials
Materials to repair air mattresses:
- Bicycle inner tube repair kit
- Rubber patch
- Contact cement
Tools:
- Sandpaper (150-200 grit)

Step 2: Sand

- First, find your leak.
- There are a variety of methods, such as using soapy water to see where the bubbles are going or submerging the mattress in water to determine where the leak is coming from.
- In most cases, the leak will be obvious enough to find by sight or sound.
- Once you have located your leak, deflate your mattress.
Puncture in the mattress area:
- If your leak is on the top flocked area of your mattress, begin gently sanding the flocked surface around the leak to reveal the smooth rubber surface underneath. By removing the flocked surface around the leak, you are creating a surface that will allow the patch to create a good seal.
- Be sure not to sand through the mattress or make the leak opening too large due to excessive sanding.
- Then use a vacuum cleaner or damp cloth to clean the area of debris.
Step 3: Apply the contact cement

- Following the instructions in the bicycle repair kit, place some contact cement on the area around the leak in the air cushion.
- Then, put some glue on the rubber patch of the bicycle tire. Let them both dry (about 2-3 minutes).
- Contact cement work when applying two sections that have cement applied together. To adhere, the cement must be dry.
- When the cement has dried, align the patch over the leak and press the patch firmly into the mattress. Rub the patch in small circular motions to remove air bubbles and ensure a good seal between the patch and the mattress.
- If corners or edges do not adhere properly, use small dabs of contact cement, following the same application procedures as before.
Just in case, I usually run a bead of cement around the perimeter of the patch, just in case
Step 4: Inflate

That's it! Once the patch has been applied, you are ready to inflate your air mattress and perform a test to see if the patch has stayed put.
As an added precaution, I usually put a small amount of talcum powder on the patch after it has been applied.
Talc acts as a lubricant on the sometimes sticky rubber and cement and reduces the chance of fabric sheets catching an edge of the patch and tearing it off.
Good luck!
