Making a simple portable beach shelter can be an idea that you can do to get you out of trouble at times.

Umbrellas fly away, and folding shelters are expensive and so high that you have to keep moving your chair to chase shade all day.

I made this beach shelter, and it worked like a charm.

This design has the added advantage of fitting in a backpack (with the poles sticking out of the top).

#1: Tools + Materials

Tools to make a simple portable beach shelter:

• Rubber mallet
• Hand drill

Materials:

• 1″ PVC pipe: 4 Pieces at 36″, 4 pieces at 24″.
• 1″ PVC Male Adapter – You need 8 of these in total, 1 for each tent pole segment.
• 1″ PVC Female Coupling: 4 needed, 1 for each tent pole.
• 1″ PVC End Cap: 8 needed, 1 per end of each assembled tent pole.
• 10-24 1 1/2″ Machine Pins: These serve as the peg at the top of each tent pole to which the tarp eyelets are attached.
  10-24 hex nuts: 1 needed for each screw.
• #10 Washers: 2 are needed for each bolt.
• Paracord: 100 feet. Something with high visibility is a good idea.
• Canvas: I used a heavy-duty 8X10 with a silver side; I put this side up to reflect the sunlight. The 8X10 worked well, but I imagine that as the tarp gets larger, the tent stakes will have to grow larger. With more surface area, the wind force that the tarp traps is substantial.
• Tent Stakes: I used the MSR Cyclone model because it works well on rocks and sand. There are certainly cheaper tent stakes that work in sand, but this is by far the most important part. Cheap tent stakes that do not collect sand will simply be removed.

#2: Assemble

• Drill a hole through the center of four of the PVC end caps. Insert a bolt with a nut on each side of the hole and tighten one nut for a firm fit.
• Use a rubber mallet to hammer the end caps with the bolts onto the ends of two of the 36″ tubes and two of the 24″ tubes.
• Hammer the male adapter to the other ends of the pipes with the end caps (the ones with bolts on them).
• Next hammer the four screwless end caps onto the ends of the four remaining pipes (two 36″ and two 24″ pipes).
• Hammer the four remaining male adapters onto the open ends of the pipes with the plain end caps.
• Couplings are used to connect the pipes so that the entire assembly can be easily packed.
• When assembled, there are two 6′ tall posts and two 4′ tall posts. Having the back of the shelter closer to the ground provides more shade.
• I drilled holes through the top of each pipe segment and tied paracord through the holes.
• These are used to tie down the shelter. I only ended up using most of the top loops, but I thought if it was really windy, I could tie down the center of the poles with more tent stakes.

#3: Design

• The design is quite simple, but it is much easier with two or more people.
• Spread the tarp in the desired location.
• Pull a length of paracord tight on the backtop, lining up the corners of the canvas. This is important because it ensures that the tension across the tarp will align with the tie downs and tent stakes.
• After pulling the rope so that the ends of the rope are about 7′ from the corners, hammer in the tent stakes at an angle that angles away from the tarp.

#4: Configuration

• I suppose it might be possible to set up this shelter alone, but I can't imagine how. Make sure you have friends and family nearby.
• Place a long pole in the front corner of the shelter (the end you want to face) and a short pole in the opposite back corner.
• Put the eyelets through the bolts in the corners and tighten the tarp to get the correct location for the poles.
• With one person holding a pole, tie the top of the pole through the paracord loop. I used a trucker's hitch, but you could also use snap rings or other fancy camping accessories to tighten the cable.
• Repeat step 3 for each post. This will require some degree of movement and adjustment of each until the shelter feels sturdy.
• Wing nuts would have been a great idea to finish off the screws and keep the tarp from blowing away in the wind, but I forgot to buy them, so I tied a small loop around the screw and tied it back to the line.
