Watch the video to see the Result.
Before building the forms, we modeled the planters in Sketchup to get the exact cut sizes for the walls.
#2: Building the shapes

- The form walls are cut on a table saw from 3/4″ melamine.
- 1″ thick pink foam strips are cut at an angle and then to the appropriate length. They are covered with clear packing tape and then adhered to the base of the form with double-sided carpet tape. The packing tape will make them easy to remove from the finished piece. These strips will create the beveled edge on the top of the planter.
- The forms are assembled with drywall screws that are pre-drilled and countersunk.
- A final detail is added to the shape, which is a 1/4″ square dowel wrapped in blue ribbon. This will create the edge for the metal plate to snap into place when the planters are finally put together.
#3: The mix

A regular mix is made of approximately:
- 2 Parts cement: 3 parts marsh: 3 parts perlite
Our Hypertufa blend is:
- 4 Parts of Concrete: 3 parts of marsh: 3 parts of perlite
The downside to regular Hypertufa is that it is not very strong and takes a long time to dry. The Hypertufa mix is easier to pack by hand and we can unmold the pieces in 2 to 4 days because they are considerably stronger.
After measuring and mixing the raw ingredients, add water to achieve a clay-like consistency.
#4: Pack the Shapes

- Start filling the forms, first place the mixture at the bottom of the form and then go up the side of the walls.
- If the mixture slides down, try layering it in thinner layers or adding more dry material to harden it.
- When you reach the top of the shape, wrap the mixture over the edge to hold it in place.
- A layer of fiberglass mesh can be troweled to the back for additional reinforcement.
- For durability, keep a thickness of approximately 3/4″- 1″.
- Cover with plastic and cure for 3-4 days.
#5: Delete the shape

- Remove the form walls and gently pull out the 1/4″ dowel.
- The pink foam is easily removed and sharp edges are rounded with diamond pads or sandpaper.
#6: Fill the base

- Thin metal strips are glued to the bottom of the pots with silicone caulk because they will be installed inside.
- Drainage holes are drilled low into the sides of the pots with a masonry bit. It is easy to drill because it does not contain large rock aggregates.
- The planters are filled with soil, watered and then a bed of green grass is planted, along with some flowers.
#7: Installation

- The pieces are carefully installed around the pond in the tea shop, being careful not to scratch the floor.
- Two 1/4″ thick metal plates join the gaps in the sides and fit into the slots created by the 1/4″ dowels.
#8: Finished Garden

The finished planters look great around the pond and, over time, the organic material in the Hypertufa mix should help them grow moss and turn green.
