Family Pallet Bed, when my family told me that I should "buy a bed/bedroom made of solid wood that will last 30 years", I went crazy because I don't think anyone needs a bed (or any other piece of furniture) that will last that long...
What I need is something ultra-cheap, recyclable, easy to build and disassemble, but at the same time maintaining the contemporary and modern look.
This is what I came up with...
Step 1: 3D model/sketch
Like most things I do, it all started as a 3D model. After a few experiments, mainly related to Pallets orientation, this design was chosen because it offers a perfect dimension fit on the standard family bed size: 160×200 cm.
Step 2: Tools and materials
The plan was to build everything with just a few tools and materials, easy and simple so any student or DIY enthusiast could do it in a weekend.
Sanding is the most important task when working with Pallet furniture - prepare for a day of sanding experience. Also, choosing those with really good wood is crucial if you want to get good results.
Tools:
- Electric sander(s)
- Brush
- Sandpaper
Materials:
- 4 standard size wooden pallets (120 x 80 x 14.5 cm)
- 2L of paint
- Cable with bulb socket and a switch
Step 3: Painting and assembly
After sanding the blades, paint them in the color you like best; I used two paint systems to make it “reflective” under the bed area (the white color reflects all the light). Then just arrange them for the preferred layout and that's it! You don't even need to fix the Pallets because they are heavy and resistant; Everything stays in place, no matter how hard you roll or jump on the bed.
As a final "romantic" touch, I removed the light bulb wire with a switch from an old lamp, just put it on a pallet and that's it.
