How to Make a Parametric Pendant Lamp with a Flower Design!, created with Grasshopper 3D. This article will cover how to cut and assemble one, but not the concept behind the definition of GH and how to manipulate the program.
If you do not have access to the Grasshopper program, you can use the templates provided in AI and DWG formats to cut your own. If you don't have access to a laser cutter, but have a lot of free time, it's still possible to cut it by hand with a somewhat precise instrument.
Step 1: What you will need

Materials:
- Anything thin, flexible and cuttable. I used a wood veneer. (You can try a stiff material if you're feeling lucky and use the GH definition with the cut fold option)
- IKEA Hemma hanging cable
- 1/8″ metal dowels to secure the pieces (plastic rivets can be a more elegant and permanent solution)
- #6-32 x .5″ bolts (a fancier fastener might look more…Sleek)
- Machine nuts #6-32
- 3D printed replacement part for the IKEA cable, attached file (this is not required, but if you don't use it, you will have to find another way to attach the lamp). Here the used one: https://goo.gl/ZbmGqx
Step 2: Cut the pieces

You can use the templates provided here, or skip to the steps outlining the GH definition to design your own layout. I cut my parts from thin ply birch with backing paper. If you are using a material with grain, it is important to design the pieces to bend with the grain. I taped my badge onto a piece of cardboard to keep it flat while cutting. The veneer will warp once it has been cut, so watch it carefully. I had to pause the laser cutter frequently to remove loose parts.
Once all the pieces are cut, organize them into groups. If you are using a template, you should have 6 of each part.

Step 3: Assembly

Start by inserting 6 of the machine nuts into a 3D printed base. Next, screw each of the #1 pieces together as shown. The side with the single hole goes above the top of the side with 2 holes. Loosely screw a nut onto each bolt, then screw each bolt into the 3D printed base as shown.
If you are not using the 3D printed base, you can attach the #1 pieces with metal nails.
Step 4: And continue the assembly

Next, attach pieces #2 to pieces #1 with metal nails, as shown. The side with the single hole is attached to the outside, and the top of the side with 2 holes is attached to the inside.
Repeat this step for each piece.
Step 5: Hang your lamp!

Then, screw the lamp wire into your beautiful finished lamp and insert your bulb. I used an LED bulb. Depending on your material, you may want to use a CFL or anything that doesn't get too hot.
Enjoy your lamps!
