With a little ingenuity and enthusiasm you can make outdoor garden furniture in an easy and practical way using basic tools.
The manufacture of this furniture has become a growing trend.
With a few basic power tools and a plan, any DIY enthusiast can make unique outdoor garden furniture that fits their lifestyle and budget.
The Cavello patio furniture shown here is a great outdoor furniture project to start with and can be made from reclaimed wood or locally available soft or hardwoods.
I chose this outdoor garden furniture because of its simple design and soft lines.
Despite the simplicity, the furniture has a modern appeal and can be stained or finished as you prefer. It is also an affordable project if you use reclaimed wood, meranti or pine.
If you prefer a natural light or blonde finish, similar to the one shown here, after sanding all pieces, apply lime wax regularly.
Use this tip to make your own lime wax.
Step 1: Prepare the planks to join

If you look closely at how this furniture is assembled, it is about 100mm wide boards cut to size. There are a couple of methods that could be used to join the planks together, since dowels are one, but I chose to show a method where a mortise is drilled.
- The method of drilling a mortise and placing a tenon style joint will create a strong bond between the sections.
I think the 10mm dowels will work just as well, if you add more along the length. - The dowel used for the demonstration was a 10 x 44mm strip of PAR pine. To accommodate this you will need to use a 10mm wood drill bit. Although I have marked the drill bit at 50mm, a depth of 30mm should be more than enough.
- Use the 10mm wood drill bit to drill holes along the cutting area to a depth of 30mm. Space the drill holes as close together as possible without overlapping, as this will cause the drill bit to slide away from the hole.
- Since the width of the drilled hole is only 10mm, using a wood chisel is not practical. A Dremel Multi-Tool with small sanding ring works like a dream for cleaning the mortise. The reason I changed the depth from 50mm to 30mm is to allow you to reach the bottom of the mortar with a Dremel sanding ring.
- On the 10 x 44mm PAR pine, I used a sander to round the corners. Cut the 10 x 44mm PAR pine to a length of 80mm. This allows 30mm mounted on the bottom and top planks and 20mm in the space between them.
Step 2: Join the Sections

- The front seat section consists of two boards joined together as explained above.
- Both side sections are joined in the same way. The two lower slats are bolted to the back of the front seat sections.
- In the back section, the slats are screwed into the sides.
- To assemble the seat slats, add 32 x 32mm slats 20mm below the top of the second slat, on the front, back and sides.
- Before attaching the side slats, screw together the 32 x 32mm cross pieces and add steel angle braces for additional support.
Step 3: Storage Coffee Table

- The storage coffee table is made with side panels made in the same way as outdoor furniture, but the base has slats that lift the coffee table off the ground and some slats on the top to keep it in place. Furniture designed by cavello.
Remember that you can make many outdoor garden furniture using pallets in a simple way.
