Huesitos Caseros are the homemade version of one of Spain's most beloved sweet snacks. These crispy wafer bars are filled with chocolate hazelnut cream, cut into sticks, and dipped in smooth milk chocolate. The result is a crunchy, chocolatey treat that's impossible to resist.

Making them at home is surprisingly easy and fun, and it's a perfect activity to do with kids. In just over 30 minutes, plus some chilling time, you'll have a batch of 15 Huesitos that taste even better than the store-bought ones.

The key is to spread a thin, even layer of chocolate hazelnut cream between the wafers so the inside stays crispy. Once you bite into one, you'll see the beautiful layers and the creamy filling.

Ingredients for Huesitos Caseros
Makes 15 Huesitos
- 20 square wafer sheets
- 150 g chocolate hazelnut cream (like Nutella)
- 300 g milk chocolate
- 2 tablespoons coconut or sunflower oil

How to Make Huesitos Caseros Step by Step
1. Spread the cream on the wafers
Spread a thin layer of chocolate hazelnut cream on 3 wafer sheets, as shown in the image. It's important to spread a thin, even layer so the inside stays crispy.

2. Stack the wafers and freeze
Stack these 3 wafers one on top of the other, leaving the Nutella facing up. Place a fourth wafer on top without any cream. Do this carefully so all wafers are perfectly aligned. Repeat with the remaining wafers, 20 in total, and the rest of the Nutella, about 150 g, to make 5 stacks of filled wafers. Once ready, put them in the freezer for 30 minutes.

3. Cut into bars and refrigerate
After 30 minutes, remove the stacks of filled wafers and cut each one into 3 equal bars using a serrated knife. Keep them in the refrigerator.

4. Melt the chocolate with oil
Put 300 g of milk chocolate in a bowl and heat in 15-second intervals in the microwave, stirring between intervals, until completely melted. Then add 2 tablespoons of coconut or sunflower oil to the chocolate to make it more fluid.

5. Dip the Huesitos in chocolate
Dip the Huesitos in the melted chocolate using a fork. Once covered, tap the fork lightly on the edge of the bowl to remove excess chocolate. Place the chocolate-coated Huesitos on a rack with parchment paper underneath to catch any drips.

6. Decorate and let dry
Optionally, before the chocolate sets, make a small wavy pattern on top with a fork to mimic the look of authentic Huesitos, as shown in the image. Let the chocolate dry at room temperature until completely hardened, or if it's hot, put them in the refrigerator to cool. Serve the Huesitos fresh or store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator to keep them crispy for 2 to 3 days.

Tips for the Best Huesitos Caseros
Keep the filling thin and even
The most important thing is to spread a thin, homogeneous layer of chocolate hazelnut cream between the wafers. This ensures the inside stays crispy and doesn't become soggy.
Chill before cutting
Freezing the stacked wafers for 30 minutes before cutting makes them firm enough to slice cleanly into bars without squishing the filling.
Customize the filling and coating
If you're feeling creative, you can personalize the filling with pistachio cream, hazelnut cream, or any other favorite. You can also coat them in a different type of chocolate to suit your taste.
