Les astronomes ont identifié une nouvelle catégorie de trous noirs que les modèles théoriques considéraient auparavant comme presque impossibles à former — appelés « trous noirs interdits » — en utilisant les données des observatoires d'ondes gravitationnelles. La découverte, rapportée dans Science le 1er avril 2026, remet en cause les modèles existants d'évolution stellaire et de formation des trous noirs, ouvrant une nouvelle frontière dans notre compréhension de ces objets cosmiques extrêmes.

Qu'est-ce qui rend ces trous noirs interdits ?

Les modèles astrophysiques standards prédisent une « lacune de masse » comprise entre environ 60 et 130 masses solaires où les trous noirs ne devraient pas exister. Les étoiles situées dans cette tranche de masse devraient être entièrement détruites par des supernovae d’instabilité par paires plutôt que de s’effondrer en trous noirs. Les objets nouvellement détectés se situent tout à fait dans cette zone interdite, ce qui suggère soit de nouveaux chemins de formation, soit des lacunes dans notre compréhension de la physique stellaire.

Comment ont-ils été détectés

Les trous noirs ont été identifiés grâce à l'analyse de signaux gravitationnels enregistrés par le réseau de détecteurs LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA. Lorsque deux trous noirs fusionnent, ils émettent des ondes gravitationnelles caractéristiques dans l'espace-temps. Les signatures de masse des objets qui fusionnent dans ces nouveaux événements les situent résolument dans la lacune de masse théorique, fournissant des preuves convaincantes que les trous noirs interdits existent bel et bien dans l'univers.

Implications théoriques

Les chercheurs proposent plusieurs mécanismes qui pourraient expliquer ces objets, notamment des fusions répétées de trous noirs dans des environnements stellaires denses tels que les amas globulaires, ou des scénarios de formation exotiques impliquant des trous noirs primordiaux issus de l'univers primordial. Les résultats devraient conduire à des révisions importantes des modèles computationnels de l'évolution stellaire, des systèmes binaires et des populations de sources d'ondes gravitationnelles.

Observations futures

Des détecteurs d'ondes gravitationnelles de prochaine génération, dont le Télescope Einstein en Europe et l'interféromètre spatial LISA de la NASA, offriront des observations à sensibilité plus élevée qui pourraient révéler des dizaines ou des centaines de trous noirs interdits supplémentaires. Ces ensembles de données à venir seront cruciaux pour déterminer à quel point ces objets sont répandus et quel mécanisme de formation est responsable — offrant une fenêtre plus approfondie sur les cycles de vie des étoiles massives.
