Build an Incredible Barbecue in the Patio of Your Home, create a great barbecue and outdoor eating area that will increase the value of your home or strengthen family ties at your weekend gatherings.

This project assumes you have some basic knowledge of brick laying and basic carpentry skills.

This is no small weekend project, and it will eat up your weekends for several months.

This is the most economical way to build a barbecue, building it yourself, but it is still a significant investment. That said, it will add more than its cost to the value of your home.

Step 1: Precautions

I know this because our house was recently appraised and the barbecue was added. It had significant value. Many parts of the project are left to the builder as it can be modified in endless ways, but if you would like the exact measurements I will post them.

You can deviate from this plan, it is not the only way to build a barbecue (or the best possible) but I think the final product turned out excellent.

Different materials can be used.

Step 2: Lay the foundation

Dig and level the piece of land on which the barbecue will sit. Before you pour the concrete, make sure all your water, electric, and gas lines are in place, because it will be difficult to get them there after you pour them.

Make all connections through the base and limit them, ours was 3'x11'.

Create a form to pour the concrete from 2x4. Mix the concrete according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Pour into the mold. level and smooth the concrete with another 2x4. It would be easier to rent/borrow a cement mixer because we will be mixing a lot.

Step 3: Where to place the concrete blocks

The first thing you need to do is use epoxy cement to embed the rebar firmly into the concrete base. Drill the hole and epoxy on it. Next, create a dry well for drainage water.

If you can connect the sink drain to a house drain pipe, this is not necessary.

Dig a deep hole that is a little bigger than the canyon you have. Our keg was obtained for free by a friend who works at a coke plant. Drill many holes in the barrel and run the drain pipes through the lid.

The bottom of the barrel is not necessary.

Place the barrel in the hole and fill it with gravel. mix the mortar/mud and lay the first layer of bricks. They should be as close to the perfect level as possible. Fill around the drain pipes with cement. The pipe and drain pipes will be buried, as the area behind the barbecue will be filled with earth.

Step 4: Continue placingmore blocks

Place the following blocks, leaving an opening for doors in the front. Place them according to the images below, use a clamp to hold the middle brick over the door.

Step 5: Create Concrete Countertop Forms

Create a shape to pour the bottom surface of the countertop. Before pouring, place the power and water lines where they need to go, and make sure everything is right BEFORE you pour the concrete.

Make sure the forms are well braced and do not bend under the weight of the concrete.

Also make sure to take into account the opposite overhang, try to get air bubbles and pockets out, but it's not that important because it will be covered with tiles later.

Be sure to use plenty of rebar, extra rebar sticking out of the blocks can be bent to cement them into the countertop.

Step 6: Create the support shapes and top shape of the countertop

Create a shape for the top counter. Because the barbecue sticks out a few feet, it is a good idea to support it. This may be an overkill, but it's safer to create wooden support shapes, we made 3.

Attach them to the side of the barbecue and pour them first. be sure to add rebar before they dry, these braces will stick up through the pabottom of the countertop.

Create that shape with the wood. our overhangs by about a foot. Make sure it is well supported and contains reinforcing bars.

Step 7: Top Counter

Mix the concrete and pour it into the mold. Make sure it is completely dry for a few days beforehand. I wasn't here when this part was made, so I don't have any photos. this photo is a few days later, make sure it is completely level. air bubbles don't matter much.

After it has been poured, epoxy drill a thick threaded rod to anchor the deck studs.

Step 8: Stucco

Mix the stucco and add the color you want. Pave it on the outside of the blocks. don't put it on the counter. Go and select which tile you will use.

Step 9: Tile

Select which tile you are going to use and get a tile cutter, mix the tile glue. Trowel over the glue and apply the tile to the countertops and the short backsplash area between the top and bottom counters in the front. We applied the border tiles first, then placed the tiles around the perimeter on top. Then we place the center pieces diagonally. Once everything is ready, install the sink and side burner, trimming around the steel if desired. shape test of your barbecue.

Step 10: Create doors

Use whatever wood you have available for doors.

We used some wood that we got free off a pallet to get that rough rustic look.

We used some antique looking hinges and handles to promote this effect.

Step 11: Create the cover/roof

We decided to go with a more open style roof. you will need 4x4 for the uprights, 2x6 for the sides and 2x2 for the slats. Use a wood finish to match the rest of the barbecue. Use a template to get the correct final cut.

Make all connections for all electricity, use location switches and outlets.

Paint the tube to match the color of the wood. Cover the base of the studs where they are screwed with trim to hide it. Install at least four lights to make grilling possible at night.

Step 12: Fill the area behind it

Fill this area with soil to cover the dry well and drainage pipes, and cover with pavers or use cement.

Step 13: Final View!

All we need now is some patio furniture and stools to place on the patio behind the barbecue. If I were to do this project again, I would have made the top of the countertop a little higher. But it's actually quite short for the bar area.

Note: Use 1/2″ layers to retain large areas of concrete as they tend to bend under pressure. This happened behind the barbecue slot, and the concrete is bowed.
