How to Build a Basket for Your Vegetables 2026

Building a basket for your vegetables can be a very easy DIY idea to do to collect all those fruits that you grow in your garden.

I know this isn't a real hack, but I wanted to make a basket that could be used for a variety of purposes, the main one being that it be used in the garden to collect and then clean the produce in the same basket.

We have also found this to be a great basket to take to both the outdoor farmers market and a local produce market.

Be prepared to be asked numerous times "Where did you get the basket?"

About 15 years ago I made some baskets similar to this design, except instead of using metal cloth for the bottom, I used wooden slats and the main purpose of those baskets was to hold magazines or knitting.

Step by step to build a basket:

Step 1: Material and cutting

• This project doesn't require a lot of material, I started with a small 2" x 10" piece of spruce that I planned up to 7/8" thick, but using 3/4" thick material would be fine.
• Background: 1 Piece of 1/2" x 1/2" Galvanized Metal Garden Netting 16" x 17"
• Ends: 2 pieces 5 1/2" high x 9" wide by 3/4" thick, 2 pieces 10" high x 1 1/2" wide by 3/4" thick
• Side rails: 2 pieces 1" tall x 15 3/8" long by 3/4" thick
• Handle/Handle: 1 Piece 1 1/8" tall x 19" long by 3/4" thick (to be re-cut to fit the angles to match the base after assembly)

Note:

I would have preferred to use landscape hardware cloth that was vinyl coated, but I couldn't find small quantities, but if I decided to go into mass production (not going to happen) it's easy to get 50 foot rolls of that.

Step 2: Finish the basket

• Begin by gluing and fastening the two end pieces together (using a waterproof glue)
• Using a piece of 1/4" thick MDF, I made a simple 9 5/8" x 4 7/8" template with a 2 1/4" radius on two corners. This will be used to route into a 1/8" wide by 5/16" deep slot for the landscape hardware cloth.
• Hold the template to the top of the end piece and drill two holes 3/16", 5/16" deep and about 1/2" down from the top of the template on both sides. This will act as a start and end point for your 1/8" router bit. I used a 5/16" one on the base that the template will follow.

TIP: Always go counterclockwise around a jig when using a jig and router bushing.

This way the rotation of the Router bit will pull towards the jig, if it goes clockwise the Router will want to move away from the jig.

Next, round the bottom two corners to match the slot using a band saw and then clean it with a disc sander.  Finally use a 1/8" round drill bit around the end pieces on both sides before sanding.

Step 3: Side Rails

• Next, run a saw cut down the middle of the two side rails about 1/2" deep, and route a 1/8" turn on all four sides.
• Slide both sides over the 16" ends of the landscape hardware cloth leaving 5/16" overhang on both ends.
• I put a couple of 1/2" nails in the side rail just to hold the bottom mesh in place

Step 4: Assemble

• Carefully fold the fabric with the two side rails into the slots on both end pieces and use a clamp to hold it in place.
• Use a 3/8' drill bit to drill about 3/16" for wood plugs.
• Next pre-drill a screw hole through the outer ends of your side rails. (try to position the screw slightly above the saw cut you placed in the rails)
• Before inserting a 2" wood screw.
• Place some wood glue on the joint to prevent the side rails from rotating.
• Repeat this for the other three joints and the handle later.

Step 5: Handle/Aza

• Rout a 5/16" turn on all four edges before pre-sanding the handle piece.
• Place the handle material on top of your end pieces and on the bottom of the handle mark the angle and length.
• Cut the handle to the correct angle (mine was 30 degrees) on a chop saw.
• Repeat the method of how the side rails were attached. I used a 3/8” plug cutter and made 6 black walnut plugs to cover the screws. Glue the plugs and rinse with sand.

Step 6: Finishing and Final View

• Once you have everything, sand as necessary and apply a food safe finish. I just used a beeswax and orange oil cleaner finish, this will help shed water when using the basket.
• Having the handle angled makes it more ergonomic to carry and easier to take items in and out of the basket. Technically this is a right-handed basket, a left-handed basket would have the handle facing the opposite direction.

In conclusion, this basket can be used for so many applications that I suggest you want to make more than one.
