Onion rings are one of the most popular side dishes in fast food, and it's no wonder—they're irresistible. This recipe shows you how to get them super crispy and delicious with a simple triple breading technique.

The secret to keeping these rings crunchy and preventing them from going soggy is a three-step coating: first flour, then a milk-and-egg batter, and finally breadcrumbs. This ensures an irresistibly crispy exterior that stays put and doesn't soften after frying.

1. Cut the onions into rings

5. Coat the rings in flour

Now prepare two plates, one with the reserved 50 g of wheat flour and another with 50 g of breadcrumbs. First, coat the rings well with flour. It's important that they are completely dry at this point so the flour distributes evenly.

9. Fry the rings in batches

Fry the onion rings in small batches so the oil temperature doesn't drop. Turn them when golden on one side and wait until the other side is golden before removing them from the oil.

Tips for the Best Crispy Onion Rings

Keep them crunchy with a triple breading

The secret to very crispy rings that don't go soft is the triple breading: first flour, then a milk-and-egg batter, and finally breadcrumbs. This keeps the coating adhered and crunchy after frying.

Fry in small batches

Fry the rings in small batches so the oil stays at the right temperature. If the oil cools down, the rings absorb too much oil and become soggy—something we definitely don't want.

Freeze for later

A trick to enjoy these rings anytime is to make a large batch and freeze some before frying. You can fry them directly from frozen and enjoy freshly made onion rings whenever you like.
