This orange mousse is one of our favorite desserts to make when oranges are at their sweetest. It is a very easy recipe that only asks for a little patience while it sets, and the reward is a wonderfully light and creamy mousse with real citrus flavor.

For this version we use whipped cream instead of eggs, following the most traditional approach. Egg-free mousse has become a popular choice for homemade desserts because it avoids any concerns about raw eggs, especially in summer, and it suits more guests at the table. The result is just as good, and the process is faster and safer.

It is ideal when oranges are in season, though out of season you can use bottled juice and frozen orange zest. We always keep zest in the freezer so it is ready whenever the craving strikes.
Ingredients for Orange Mousse
These amounts make 4 servings of orange mousse.
- 3 sheets of gelatin
- 3 oranges
- 200 ml heavy whipping cream (35% fat)
- 60 g powdered sugar

How to Make Orange Mousse Step by Step
1. Hydrate the Gelatin
First, hydrate 3 sheets of gelatin in cold water for at least 10 minutes.

2. Zest and Juice the Oranges
Meanwhile, zest the washed peel of 1 orange and juice 3 oranges. In total, you will need 200 ml of juice.

3. Whip the Cream
When the cream starts to thicken, add 60 g of powdered sugar and keep whipping until the cream holds soft peaks.

4. Add the Sugar and Whip to Soft Peaks
Continue beating until the cream is fully whipped and glossy, ready to fold with the orange mixture.

5. Dissolve the Gelatin in Warm Juice
Warm 50 ml of the juice and dissolve the drained gelatin in it. Add the rest of the juice and mix well.

6. Fold in the Cream, Juice and Zest
Add the orange zest to the whipped cream and gently fold in the orange juice little by little along with the reserved zest.

7. Divide and Chill
Divide the mousse among 4 glasses or cups and keep them in the fridge, covered with plastic wrap, for at least 3 hours until the mousse is fully set.

8. Serve
Once set, this delicious orange mousse is ready to serve.

Tips for the Best Orange Mousse
Use Cream Instead of Eggs
This recipe uses whipped cream rather than eggs, which is the more traditional approach and avoids any concerns about raw eggs. It is especially handy in summer and makes the dessert suitable for more guests. The result is just as creamy and much quicker to prepare.
Choose the Right Oranges
Fresh oranges at peak sweetness give the best flavor, but you can also use bottled juice and frozen zest when oranges are out of season. Keeping zest in the freezer means you can make this mousse any time. Just be sure to wash the orange well before zesting.
Presentation Ideas
A simple serving in glasses decorated with orange zest is always elegant. For a richer treat, place Lotus biscuits at the bottom of the glasses, as the flavor combination is delicious. If you have candied oranges on hand, chop them small and use them to decorate the glasses for an interesting contrast of textures.
