Chocolate torrijas are a decadent variation of one of Spain's most beloved traditional desserts. The addition of chocolate turns the classic Easter treat into something deeply indulgent, with a creamy interior and a crisp, golden crust. If you love sweets, this combination of bread, milk and chocolate is a sure winner.

The key to enjoying them at their very best is to let them rest for a few minutes after frying. This allows the flavors to settle and the texture to improve considerably. You can serve them just as they are, or pair them with whipped cream, ice cream or fresh fruit for an irresistible finish.

This version is a gourmet twist that intensifies the flavor of the traditional dessert and gives it a creamier result. There are several ways to prepare them, but this is our favorite. With just 30 minutes of total time, you can have a batch of ten ready to share.

Ingredients for Chocolate Torrijas
Serves 10
- 1 liter whole milk
- 50 g dark chocolate
- 50 g unsweetened cocoa powder
- 20 g white sugar
- 10 slices of bread for torrijas or day-old regular bread
- 2 medium eggs
- Oil for frying
- 30 g dark chocolate (for decoration)
- 30 ml heavy cream (at least 35% fat)
- 50 g white sugar (for coating)

How to Make Chocolate Torrijas Step by Step
1. Heat the milk with chocolate
Start by heating 1 liter of whole milk with 50 grams of dark chocolate, 50 grams of cocoa powder and 20 grams of white sugar. Bring to medium heat, stirring until the chocolate and cocoa dissolve and the sugar is fully integrated into the mixture.

2. Cool the mixture completely
Remove from the heat and let it cool completely at room temperature. You can do this the day before and leave the mixture to cool in the fridge.

3. Soak the bread
Soak 10 slices of bread in the cold milk. Let them soak well on both sides and drain on a rack if necessary.

4. Dip in beaten egg
Beat 2 medium eggs and dip the soaked torrijas in the egg, then set them aside on a plate.

5. Fry the torrijas
Heat the oil for frying to about 180°C (350°F). Fry the torrijas for a couple of minutes on each side until golden to your liking. Remove them from the oil and place on paper towels to drain excess oil. Let them rest for about 10 minutes.

6. Make the chocolate cream
Meanwhile, make the decoration cream. Heat 30 grams of dark chocolate and 30 ml of heavy cream in a bowl in the microwave for 30 seconds. Mix well with a whisk and set aside until ready to decorate.

7. Coat and decorate
Coat the fried torrijas in 50 grams of white sugar. Transfer the chocolate cream to a piping bag or similar and decorate the torrijas with the chocolate cream.

8. Serve
Serve the chocolate torrijas. They are delicious on their own, but even better with a little whipped cream, ice cream or fruit.

Tips for the Best Chocolate Torrijas
Let them rest after frying
Allowing the torrijas to rest for a few minutes after frying lets the flavors settle and improves the texture considerably. This simple step makes a big difference.
Use day-old bread
Day-old bread is ideal because it absorbs the chocolate milk without falling apart. If your bread is too fresh, it may become too soggy.
Serve with accompaniments
While they are already a complete and tasty dessert, serving them with whipped cream, ice cream or fresh fruit makes them completely irresistible.
